Sub~Floor? What Sub~Floor?

So I have looked up when in the basement before. I actually spent quite some time looking at the joists with the inspector. Yet for some reason, I never really looked at the ceiling/floor above the joists. Maybe then I would have realized why someone put other imitation wood floors all over the first floor on top of the real wood.

The past two weekends were the annual Sands point Medieval Festival, where Doug and I always help out. We brought the girls for the first weekend, but not the second.

As always, Doug fought bravely. I think he was a good guy this year… (he’s the one standing)

I helped out in the A&S booth, demoing various fiber arts, and enjoying the lovely days outside. The first weekend all four of us spent the night in the girls’ little 10×10 pavilion. It was a tight fit, but so nice in the morning to wake up with the girls.

Here we have Kyla inspecting the camp on Sunday morning. (more…)

Many moons ago I was sitting in my first day of Make Up class at The Theater School at DePaul University, and met the boy sitting next to me, Mike. I was a first year costume designer and he was a second year actor. He didn’t seem to fit in so much with his classmates, I could relate. Of course, he was also gorgeous, so that helped, too!

As the year went on, we became friends. I was rather skilled at make up, so he tended to turn to me when he needed some help. I also worked in the costume storage rooms for my work study job. Occationally he would stop in when I was working and plop on down on a trunk to talk. He used to just open up about everything to me. He would tell me that he knew that he would always work after graduation, because of his looks, but that he didn’t know he had the talent to make him deserve that work. I knew he had the talent. I could look at Mike a see a good man with talent, but also (more…)

Much craziness since we last talked. Let’s see here, how about a basic run down?

Gift-for-Pennsic-friends

First, Doug went off to Pennsic XL (that’s 40, not extra large). It was quite surreal to know that he was there, while I wasn’t; even more so each evening when he would call. However, considering everything we had planned with my Mother’s side of the family in the upcoming week, there was no sane or financially intelligent way for the rest of us to join him. (more…)

Mother’s Day!

We had a very nice Mother’s day. It started out as any Sunday, cleaning and shopping.

Then I was off to play with the Yarrrn Club at InsaniTea!! I worked on cross stitch, as it is something I can do left handed.

At 4pm, when the fiber fun was over, Doug and the girls showed up. We had a little tea party. The Yummy Berry tea that Ingred served up was, well, YUMMY!!!! I had to buy some to bring home. The girls played the little bongo drums and a guitar and danced around between cups. It was a lovely time.

Then the four of us walked around a bit. It was a gorgeous day! Eventually we stopped and had a wonderful outdoor dinner at Raymond’s. They have a wonderful menu with both vegetarian and meat dishes. I have to remember them next time I have veggie guests!

Finally we crossed the street and grabbed some dessert to go from Cupcakes Galore. Kyla got an Elmo cupcake, and Vada got Hello Kitty.

They are my girls, alright. The first thing they did was eat the eyes. Mmmm.

Well, with the launch of Craft Hope Project 13, my little NJ apartment is about to get a lot smaller and a lot bigger at the same time.

Smaller due the massive amount of handmade blankets that will soon start arriving on my doorstep. All to warm the hearts and the nights of those affected by the Alabama tornadoes.

Bigger with the hope and love those blankets will provide.

I look forward to each and every blanket.

Still here.

Things have gotten a bit crazy around here for the holidays. The recession has finally impacted us, so it has been a very handmade holiday; therefor, I have been very busy, but I am still here. We also lost a car, which has added a bit of stress, but we have adjusted. There was another factor to my absence.

Now I tell you this not in the spirit of over~sharing, but because it is something very misunderstood. I suffer from depression. Not the spoiled~little~girl~didn’t~get~her~way~and~is~pouting variety that I’ve seen people try to pass off as depression for attention or drugs; but Major Depressive Disorder. In short, this means the chemicals in my brain are out of whack, so I can not just “snap out of it/get over it/choose to be happy.” I first had a problem in high school and sought help in undergrad. I was on meds for two years and then was finally able to control my emotions without meds. For many years I was fine. In my experience, when I am doing good I can continue to do good and even deal with stress and negative situations almost as any “normal” person would. However, (more…)

Doug’s Birthday and Janice’s Quilt

Saturday was Doug’s birthday. Unfortunately I awoke in the middle of the night rather sick, so I ended up missing most of the day. We had planned to go to a Medieval event on Long Island that afternoon; I told him to take the girls and go without me. Being a good husband and father, he took many pictures.

The event had a tavern theme, which, in this group at least, did not mean drink yourself silly. It was set up with tavern games of old ~ and some of new ~ tavern food, and of course…

Catching up ~ Gardening and Crafting!

Here are some old photos of the girls helping out neighbor garden, and making fun crafts. Lots of cuteness going on!

OK, this is about a month old, but too cute not to share. It was a morning when the weather was a bit too chilly to go for a walk, but we were in an “outing” kind of mood. So I packed up the girls and we drove over to AC Moore to find some fun $1 crafts. They each got two ~ more on those later.

When we got home, the weather was a bit nicer. Vera and Vincent, the lovely Italian couple who live next door, were in their back yard. The girls spotted them, so we HAD to go and visit. Vera was working on her flower gardens. The girls decided to help.

Once all the flowers were planted ~ at which point Mommy finally realized she had her camera with her and should start taking pictures ~ it was time for some watering. So Vada helped Vera fill the water.

In mid-May Jenn had a wonderful idea to take the girls on a great little outing for one of our Wednesday Play/Craft Days.

We got all dolled up and the girls put on their shoes. Look at those cute little pink toenails! One day they noticed mine and just begged for pretty pink toes, too. So now we have fun mommy and girls mani/pedi days about once a week. They love it. I love the hair drier with the cool setting I use to dry them so they don’t get nail polish on everything! (more…)

Many moons ago I bought some fun flannel froggie fabric, but it has sat in a box ever since. Last month I put a bit of it to use, but as some of the creations were gifts, I had to wait to share.

See the fabric? Isn’t it just Froggie Fabulous?

Medieval University

Remember my basket making post? I said I had to teach some friends how to make the baskets, also? That was this weekend. On Saturday, one of our Medieval groups had a Medieval University. It was basically a day full of classes to share the various Medieval arts and crafts we knew. I taught basket making to three lovely ladies, unfortunately, I forgot to take pictures. I did bring the camera to the class. I even dropped it in the basket water. Luckily I fished it out in time, and all was well. I do have pictures from the day, just none from the class.

At the beginning of the day, Doug took the girls outside to play in the playground. The site we were at was a church with a preschool, and they had a wonderful playground. It was just right for our girls. They loved that they were able to play on the whole thing without needing help from Daddy. There were a few slides, and much sliding fun!

There was also a little house to play in, and to peer out from. (more…)

Quilt Squares for Janice

So remember how I told you about our friend Janice? She is very sick with cancer and when asked what her friends could do for her, she said she wanted a quilt. I made three squares for the quilt, and Doug made one, also. They have been sent to Rose who will put them together with all the other squares and turn them into a quilt.

I started with a log cabin. I’ve never made one before, but always wanted to. Now after making one square, I would love to do a whole quilt.

log-cabin-for-Janice

After the traditional log cabin, I thought “why not do the same thing with another shape?” So here you have a triangle. Who knows, maybe that log cabin quilt I want to make one day will be hexagons, ’cause we know my fondness for hexagons! (more…)

I have been in a bit of a funk for the past few days. It seems to be going around blogland. Maybe it’s the weather. No snow to play in, but not warm enough to go play in the park. Short days are a bummer, I like the sunlight. Anyway, I will stop passing my funk on to you, but this post will probably just be a lot of pics and few words.

Last weekend we went to one of our medieval events. We are involved with two medieval groups, a smaller group called the MSR that is in and around the NYC/Long Island area, and a larger group called the SCA that is all over the country and in a few other countries as well. So this event was for the coronation of our new King and Queen in the MSR, both of whom I am very fond of. Here are a few *bad* snaps of them. Sorry, still getting used to the new camera, and (more…)
