The puff stitch is a dimensional stitch that adds soft texture to your crochet. Here you will learn the basic puff stitch and how to use it on it’s own or within other stitches. There are written instructions, a video, and a written and charted pattern to help you practice your puff st. There are also several patterns listed at the end of this post that use the puff st so you can put your new stitch to use!

Here are several ways for you to learn the puff stitch:
Puff Stitch (puff st): [Yo, insert hook into st, yarn over, pull through st] 4 times (9 loops on hook), yo, pull through all loops on hook.

The sample in the photo is made with Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn and a 5.50mm hook.
Ch ~ chain
Hdc ~ half double crochet
Rem ~ remain(ing)
St(s) ~ stitch(es)
Sk ~ skip
Row 1: With first color, ch 29, turn, puff st in 5th chain from hook, ch 1, sk 1, [puff st in next ch, ch 1, sk 1] 11 times, hdc in last ch.
Row 2~4: Ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch 1), [puff st in top of next puff st, ch 1] 12 times, hdc in last st.
Row 5, 7: With next color, ch 2 (counts as hdc), [puff st in ch-1 sp, ch 1] 12 times, ch once more, hdc in last st
Row 6, 8: Ch 3 (counts as hdc, ch 1), puff st in ch-2 sp, ch 1, Ch 2, [puff st in ch-1 sp, ch 1] 10 times, puff st in last ch-1 sp, hdc in last st.
Row 9, 11: With last color, ch 2 (counts as hdc), hdc in each of next 4 sts, [puff st in next st, hdc in each of next 5 sts] 3 times, puff st in next st, hdc in each of next 3 sts.
Row 10, 12: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), [puff st in next st, hdc in each of next 5 sts] 4 times, puff st in next st, hdc in each of next 2 sts.
