Inside: Level up your crochet skills with the Archie Argyle crochet square. This pattern is fun, colorful, and easier than it looks!

Three rounds of tall stitches come together over double crochet and single crochet rounds to create this playful argyle crochet square. Use two colors to offset each other, or one color for a clean, yet still textured, look. Either way, with process photos and video tutorials, this 12-inch afghan block is easier than it looks!

diamond top (dtop): This is essentially a fp5st, fpttr, fp5st together. Yo 5 times, insert hook around post of first indicated st from front to back to front again, yo, pull up a loop (7 loops on hook), [yo, pull through 2 loops] 5 times (2 loops on hook), yo 4 times, insert hook around post of second indicated st from front to back to front again, yo, pull up a loop (7 loops on hook), [yo, pull through 2 loops] 4 times (3 loops on hook), yo 5 times, insert hook around post of third indicated st from front to back to front again, yo, pull up a loop (9 loops on hook), [yo, pull through 2 loops] 5 times, 4 loops on hook, yo, pull through all loops.

Pattern Notes
- Read through all instructions before beginning.
- Post stitches count as a st, which means when working a st after a post st, be sure to skip the stitch in the previous rnd that is behind the post stitch. So if a rnd starts with a post stitch and then a dc, the dc will go in the second stitch.
- Yes, there are other names for the tall stitches, such as octuple treble instead of 9st. I find those names tend to confuse people, so on the very tall stitches I went with names that makes life easier by designating the number of yarn overs.
- The stitch count is at the end of each row/round after the period, usually only if the count has changed from the previous row/round. [count here]
Archie Argyle Square Pattern
Rnd 1 (RS): With CC ch 4, sl st in first ch to form a loop, dch2 in loop, ch 2, [3 dc in loop, ch 2] 3 times, 2 dc in loop, sl st to top of dch2 to join. [12 sts]
Fasten off CC.
Rnd 2: Join MC with a sl st in ch-2 sp, (dch2, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, [dc in each st to next ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) dc in each st to next ch-2 sp, dc in ch-2 sp, sl st to dch2 to join. [7 sts on each side]
Rnds 3-4: Sl st in ch-2 sp, (dch2, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 sp, [dc in each st to next ch-2 sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) dc in each st to next ch-2 sp, dc in ch-2 sp, sl st to dch2 to join. [15 sts on each side after completing Rnd 4]
Fasten off MC.
Rnd 5: Join CC with a sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 1 (does not count as a st here or throughout), (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, [fp9st around first dc of same side of Rnd 1, sc in next 6 sts, fp7st around middle dc of same side of Rnd 1, sc in next 6 sts, fp9st around last dc of same side of Rnd 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp] 3 times, fp9st around first dc of same side of Rnd 1, sc in next 6 sts, fp7st around middle dc of same side of Rnd 1, sc in next 6 sts, fp9st around last dc of same side of Rnd 1, sl st in first sc of rnd to join. [17 sts on each side]
Rnd 6: Still with CC, repeat Rnd 2. [21 sts on each side]
Fasten off CC.
Rnd 7: Join MC with a sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 1, [(sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, fpttr around fp9st, sc in next 5 sts, fpttr around same fp9st, sc in next 3 sts, fpdtr around fp7st, sc in next 3 sts, fpttr around fp9st, sc in next 5 sts, fpttr around same fp9st] 4 times, sl st in top of first sc of rnd to join. [23 sts on each side]
Rnds 8-9: Repeat Rnd 3. [31 sts on each side after completing Rnd 9]
Fasten off MC.
Rnd 10: Join CC with a sl st in ch-2 sp, ch 1, [(sc, ch 1, fp6st2tog around both fpttr at corner of Rnd 7, ch 1, sc) in ch-2 sp, sc in next 15 sts, d-top around next 3 fp sts of Rnd 7, sc in next 15 sts] 4 times, sl st to top of first sc of rnd to join. [33 sts on each side and fp6st2tog on each corner]
Rnd 11: Sl st in ch-1 sp, [sc in ch-1 sp, ch 2, sc in next ch-1 sp, sc in each st across to next ch-1 sp] 4 times, sl st to top of first sc to join. [35 sts on each side]
Rnd 12: Sl st in ch-2 sp, [(sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 sp, sc in each st across to next ch-2 sp] 4 times, sl st to top of first sc to join. [37 sts on each side]
Fasten off CC.
Rnd 13: With MC, repeat Rnd 12. [39 sts on each side]
