This hat is so easy, quick, and fun. If you can chain and double crochet, you can make Eli! Eli is simply a double crochet tube made with 2 strands of worsted weight yarn held together, and then it is gathered at the top with a chain stitch draw string. Pom poms can then be added onto the ends of the drawstrings for extra fun! You can also find a pattern for this hat made with 2 strands of chunky yarn, here. Make a matched set with the Ali cowl (which can also be worn on its own as a hood) or the Leo scarf.

Gauge:
Holding 2 strands of yarn together and working them as one: 8 stitches and 5 rows in dc make a 4” square.
Stitches and Skills used:
Ch ~ chain
dc ~ double crochet
sl st ~ slip stitch
St(s) ~ stitch(es)
Beg ~ beginning
Rep ~ repeat
Getting Started:
Hold 2 strands of yarn together and work as one for entire pattern.
Hat:
Row 1(right side): Ch 31 (35, 38, 42, 46), sl st into a circle, being careful not to twist ch, ch 3 (counts as first dc) dc in each remaining st around, sl st into top of beg ch 3. (31 (35, 38, 42, 46) dc)
**Option: Instead of making a chain and then dc, you can make a foundation double crochet of 31 (35, 38, 42, 46) sts, and then join into a circle with a sl st. You will need to use the starting tail end to sew the bottom join together.
Row 2 (right side): Do NOT turn, ch 3 (counts as first dc) dc in each remaining st around, sl st into top of beg ch 3. (31 (35, 38, 42, 46) dc)
Rep row 2: until piece is 11 (12, 12, 13, 14) rows tall. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Tie String:
Ch 31 (35, 38, 42, 46), fasten off. Leave yarn tails of at least 6” on each end of ch to tie on decorative items. Weave chain around hat, in an out of every 2 to 3 sts, between rows 2 and 3 (it is important to have the tie on this end, as the starting chain usually does not stretch as much.) Tie chain tight to gather top together.
Finishing:
Add a decorative item to the ends of the tie string, such as charms, tassels, or pom poms. To make pom poms, make one of each color yarn used in the hat, and wrap it around a 2” item 60 times. Tie it tightly around the middle and clip to make a 1” pom pom.
