How to FSC – Foundation Single Crochet

Learn how to fsc so you can get started with your crochet projects faster! Foundation single crochet is a great alternative to a starting chain with single crochets worked into it.

Basically, you make the chain and the single crochet in one stitch. This makes a long starting row much easier, and it’s also more stretchy. This tutorial will explain how to make the foundation single crochet with written instructions, photos, and a video.

Abbreviations
ch – chain
fsc – foundation single crochet
yo – yarn over

Foundation Single Crochet (fsc): Ch 2, insert hook in first ch made, yo, pull through ch (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through 1 loop (counts as ch), yo, pull through both loops (first fsc made), *insert hook in ch just made, yo, pull through ch (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through 1 loop (counts as ch), yo, pull through both loops (next fsc made); repeat from * to desired length.
