This 12” crochet square utilizes the Jacob’s Ladder stitch in 2 directions to add texture and interest to the design. It is built off of the 6” Jacob’s square. You can change the color pattern around for a variety of looks. Kismet is gender neutral, making it great for a baby blanket! The idea for turning the Jacob’s ladder stitch on its side came from an awesome pattern designed by Tamara of Moogly. I’m not sure if she was the first to do it, but that is the first place I saw it.

Special Stitches:
qtr ~ Quad Treble Crochet: yo 5 times, insert hook into stitch, yo, pull through stitch (7 loops on hook), [yo, pull through 2 loops] 6 times.
Getting Started:
This pattern is worked off of the Jacob’s square. Complete the Jacob’s square without clipping the yarn at the end of round 7, then continue with this pattern. Click here for the Jacob’s Square pattern.
Pattern:
Round 1: Sl st into ch-2 corner space, ch 8 (counts as first qtr and ch 2), * qtr in first sc after ch-2 corner, (ch 1, skip 1, qtr in next st) 10 times, ch 2, qtr in ch-2 corner, ch 2, repeat from * 2 more times, qtr in first sc after ch-2 corner, (ch 1, skip 1, qtr in next st) 10 times, ch 2, sl st to 6th ch of beginning ch 8.
Loop Ladder: Twist first qtr from round 1, ½ turn, * pull the next qtr through the loop, repeat from * around until all the qtr have been pulled through.
Insert hook from behind work, under the ch 2 and through the last qtr loop, insert hook back down to over the loop, and through the first qtr loop made, yo, pull through everything on hook. This will tack down the last loop. See the photos for step by step help.
Round 2: Ch 10, (3 sc in ch-2 space, 2 sc in each of next 5 ch-1 spaces, ch 7, 2 sc in each of next 5 ch-1 spaces, 3 sc in ch-2 space, ch 9) 3 times, 3 sc in ch-2 space, 2 sc in each of next 5 ch-1 spaces, ch 7, 2 sc in each of next 5 ch-1 spaces, 3 sc in ch-2 space, sl st to 1st chain of beginning ch 10.
Round 3: Ch 12 (counts as first dc and ch 9) 3 dc in next sc, dc in each of the next 12 sc, ch 7 (dc in each of the next 12 sc, 3 dc in next sc, ch 9, 3 dc in next sc, dc in each of the next 12 sc, ch 7) 3 times, dc in each of the next 12 sc, 2 dc in same st as the join of the last round, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 12.
Round 4: Ch 12 (counts as first dc and ch 9) 3 dc in next dc, dc in each of the next 14 dc, ch 7 (dc in each of the next 14 dc, 3 dc in next dc, ch 9, 3 dc in next dc, dc in each of the next 14 dc, ch 7) 3 times, dc in each of the next 14 dc, 2 dc in same st as the join of the last round, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 12.
Loop Ladder: Twist a ch space from round 2, ½ turn, pull the ch sp above it in round 3 through the loop, pull the ch sp above it in round 4 through the loop. Repeat for remaining 7 ladders.
Round 5: Ch 3 (counts as firs dc) (2 sl st in next ch loop, 3 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 16 dc, sl st in next ch loop, dc in each of next 16 dc, 3 dc in next dc) 3 times, 2 sl st in next ch loop, 3 dc in next dc, dc in each of next 16 dc, sl st in next ch loop, dc in each of next 16 dc, 2 dc in same st as the join of the last round, sl st to top of beginning ch 3.
Round 6: Sl st in corner sp, ch 3, sc in corner sp, (sc in each of next 39 sts, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner sp) 3 times, sc in each of next 39 st, sc in corner sp, sl st to first ch-3 sp made.
Round 7: Sl st in corner sp, ch 3, sc in corner sp, (sc in each of next 41 sts, (sc, ch 2, sc) in corner sp) 3 times, sc in each of next 41 st, sc in corner sp, sl st to first ch-3 sp made. (43 sc on each side, ch-2 on each corner)
