Mariposa was given its name by some of the amazing artists in my local knit and crochet group because they said the shawl looks like a butterfly. I really enjoyed creating Mariposa, it’s an easy and fun pattern to make and the yarn is a joy to work with. Nurturing Fibres Eco-Fusion yarn is made in South Africa, and the American distributor, Good Loops Yarn, has given me a discount code for all of you!

ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)

Special Stitches:
Stack 2 Single Crochet (st2sc): Insert hook into st, yo, pull through (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through both loops (sc just made), insert hook in loop on left side of sc just made, yo, pull through (2 loops on hook), yo, pull through both loops. – This st is used to replace a starting chain at the beginning of a row of dc.

Getting Started:
Row counts are at the end of each row after the period, if the count has changed from the previous row. – {count here}
Chs and sl sts are not included in Row counts unless specified.
Leave an 8″ tail at the start and end of each color change. These will be used in the tassels so there is no need to weave in any ends.

Tassels

To make tassels on ends, cut 10 pieces of yarn each 14″ long. Pull the yarn half way through the end of the shawl and join it with the existing end, then make an overhand knot.
To make tassel on point, cut 8 pieces of yarn each 14″ long. Pull 4 pieces half way through the point on one side of the shawl and the other 4 half way through the point on the other side of the shawl. Join all the pieces of yarn together with the existing ends, then make an overhand knot.
Remaining tassels each hang from the center of the sets of 2 rows of Color A and Color E. Insert hook through the edge of the center of on of the stripes and pull the 4 surrounding ends through. Cut 4 pieces of yarn each 14″ long and pull them half way through the same spot. Make an overhand knot.
