The Waterfall Necklace was on my mind for many years before I designed it. When I was working as a costume designer I made a dress with a similar neck in beads, and I have always wanted to replicate that as a necklace in crochet. Then I saw a gold chain and diamond necklace in a magazine ad that rekindled the memory, so I grabbed some yarn and beads and began! It is important that the beads used in this piece have holes large enough to fit a steel hook (1.25-1.5mm) through.

Size:
Fits most adult woman, finished neck circumference is 14 1/4”, this can be adjusted by changing hook sizes if needed.

Yarn:
Prism, Tencel Tape (100% Tencel; 2oz, appox. 120ys; DK weight): #502, 2 skeins

Hook:
US-G/6 (4 mm), and a 1.1 or 1.25 mm steel hook for beading.

Gauge:
22 sl st in back loop = 4″
To make gauge swatch, use larger hook:
Row 1: Ch 25, sl st in bottom loop of 2nd ch from hook and each ch across, turn – 24 sl sts.
Row 2 ~ 9: Ch 1 (does not count as a st here or throughout), 4 ssbl, [ch 6, skip 6, 4 ssbl] 2 times, turn – 24 sts.
Lay gauge swatch flat, without stretching. Gauge swatch should measure 4 1/4” long.

Other supplies:
6/0 beads, approx. 432
yarn needle
(9) 3/8” buttons
sewing needle
sewing thread

Stitches and Abbreviations:
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)

Special Stitches:
Place Bead (pb): Slide a bead onto smaller hook, remove loop from larger hook and place it on smaller hook, slide bead off smaller hook and over loop, place loop back on larger hook and make next stitch as indicated in pattern.
Slip stitch in back loop (ssbl): Insert hook in back loop of next st, yo, pull through everything on hook.
Slip stitch in front loop (ssfl): Insert hook in front loop of next st, yo, pull through everything on hook.

Getting Started:
To change the size of your necklace, just change the gauge. After the first 9 rows of the pattern are complete the length of the piece should fit comfortably around the wearer’s lower neck with a ½” overlap. If your piece is too short, use a larger hook, if it is too long, use a smaller hook.
When working slip stitches, be careful not to pull stitches too tight, as it will be harder to work into them if they are tight.

  1. I bought all the supplies from your list and I’m really struggling to get the beads onto the yarn. They fit in the smaller hook no problem, but it seems they aren’t big enough to fit over the yarn. Any suggestions?

    • Maybe try making a loop of dental floss and stringing the yarn through that then pull the floss through the bead? I remember it was a bit of a pull to get them through with the hook, but I did use the hook. The floss may be easier.
