Inside: If you’re looking for an easy necklace pattern that makes an impressive statement, the Waterfall Crochet Necklace is the perfect choice.

PinPin

The yarn for this design was provided by Prism. This pattern was originally published in Interweave Crochet, Summer 2015.

The Waterfall Necklace was on my mind for many years before I designed it. When I was working as a costume designer I made a dress with a similar neck in beads, and I have always wanted to replicate that as a necklace in crochet. Then I saw a gold chain and diamond necklace in a magazine ad that rekindled the memory, so I grabbed some yarn and beads and began! It is important that the beads used in this piece have holes large enough to fit a steel hook (1.25-1.5mm) through.

This fashionable necklace is the perfect statement piece! It is easy to make with a beautiful effect. With its pattern of flowing beaded chains, it gives a light and airy feel. This necklace is sure to turn heads and will be the perfect way to add a personal touch to any outfit. Crafted in delicate yarn, this necklace is a timeless must-have piece that you’ll want to wear all the time.

Special Stitches

Place Bead (pb): Slide a bead onto smaller hook, remove loop from larger hook and place it on smaller hook, slide bead off smaller hook and over loop, place loop back on larger hook and make next stitch as indicated in pattern.
Slip stitch in back loop (ssbl): Insert hook in back loop of next st, yo, pull through everything on hook.

Slip stitch in front loop (ssfl): Insert hook in front loop of next st, yo, pull through everything on hook.

Pattern Notes

  • Read through all instructions before beginning.
  • When working slip stitches, be careful not to pull stitches too tight, as it will be harder to work into them if they are tight.
  • The stitch count is at the end of each rnd/row after the period, usually only if the count has changed from the previous rnd/row. {count here}
  • Chs and sl sts are not included in stitch counts unless specified.

FAQs

How do I change the size?

To change the size of your necklace, just change the gauge. After the first 9 rows of the pattern are complete the length of the piece should fit comfortably around the wearer’s lower neck with a ½” overlap. If your piece is too short, use a larger hook, if it is too long, use a smaller hook.

  1. I bought all the supplies from your list and I’m really struggling to get the beads onto the yarn. They fit in the smaller hook no problem, but it seems they aren’t big enough to fit over the yarn. Any suggestions?

    • Maybe try making a loop of dental floss and stringing the yarn through that then pull the floss through the bead? I remember it was a bit of a pull to get them through with the hook, but I did use the hook. The floss may be easier.

    • Very late to this party I know, but it may help someone coming after me. I used a small piece of wire folded in half – thread it through the loop so that the loop sits in the fold, bring the ends together and thread your bead over both of them then pull it down.

  2. I love this necklace! I am struggling with the stitch orientation right in the beginning. Do I crochet in the back bumps of the starting chain, or down into the bottom loop from the front or up into the bottom loop from behind? I have tried all three and it’s just not looking right.
