Raised Stripes Hat – Free Crochet Pattern

This hat gets its name from the front post stitches running down the hat, and the color stripes running around the hat. The bottom of the hat is made in a front post/back post rib stitch, and can be folded up for a shorter hat, left down for a warm long hat, or just the front folded up so the sides and back still keep your ears and neck warm. Sizes:
Toddler (Child, Adult Small, Adult Medium, Adult Large)
fits head: 14 (17, 20, 22, 24) inches

Yarn:
Worsted weight, such as Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice or Heartland. See photos for yarn used in each sample.

Hook:
US I/5.50mm hook or size needed to obtain gauge.

Worked in hdc
13 sts by 10 rows in 4″

Getting Started:
This pattern is written without telling you when to change colors. The reason for that is the horizontal color stripes are up to you. Use the pictures in the pattern to find a stripe you like, or come up with your own. Do what makes you happy!

Hat Top

Round 1: Ch 4, sl st to first ch to form a loop, ch 3 (counts as first dc), 9 dc into loop, sl st to top of ch 3 (10 dc)

Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), fpdc around same dc (this is actually the ch 3 that counted as the first dc of round 1), [hdc in next dc, fpdc in same dc] 9 times, sl st to top of ch 2 (20 sts)

Round 3: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc [hdc in next hdc, (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc] 9 times, sl st to top of ch 2 (30 sts)

Round 4: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in next hdc (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc [hdc in each of next 2 hdc, (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc] 9 times, sl st to top of ch 2 (40 sts) Size Toddler, move onto Hat Sides.

Round 5: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in each of next 2 hdc (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc [hdc in each of next 3 hdc, (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc] 9 times, sl st to top of ch 2 (50 sts) Size Child, move onto Hat Sides.

Round 6: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in each of next 3 hdc (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc [hdc in each of next 4 hdc, (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc] 9 times, sl st to top of ch 2 (60 sts) Size Adult Small, move onto Hat Sides.

Round 7: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in each of next 4 hdc (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc [hdc in each of next 5 hdc, (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc] 9 times, sl st to top of ch 2 (70 sts) Size Adult Medium, move onto Hat Sides.

Round 8: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in each of next 5 hdc (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc [hdc in each of next 6 hdc, (hdc, fpdc) in next fpdc] 9 times, sl st to top of ch 2 (80 sts) Size Adult Large, move onto Hat Sides, Round 2.

Hat Sides

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in each of next 2 (3, 4, 5, 6) sts, fpdc in next fpdc, [hdc in each of next 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) sts, fpdc in next fpdc] 9 times, sl st to top of ch 2 (40 (50, 60, 70, 80) sts)

Repeat Round 1: 6 (9, 9, 10, 10) more times (11 (15, 16, 18, 19) rounds total in hat so far)

Bottom Band

Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), fpdc in next st, [bpdc in next st, fpdc in next st] around, sl st to top of ch 2 (40 (50, 60, 70, 80) sts)

Round 2: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), fpdc in next fpdc, [bpdc in next bpdc, fpdc in next fpdc] around, sl st to top of ch 2 (40 (50, 60, 70, 80) sts)

Repeat Round 2: 1 (1, 2, 2, 2) more times

Last Round: Ch 1 (does not count as first st) sc in each st around, fasten off all colors. (40 (50, 60, 70, 80) sts)
