Rnd 33: Ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in each sc around, join with a sl st to beg sc. (200 sc) Cut a piece of brimlock that is 44” long. Join it into a circle.
Rnd 34: Working over the brimlock circle, sc in each sc all the way around, join with a sl st to first sc, fasten off. (200 sc) Weave in all ends.
Make 2 chains or braids that are 60” long each.
Fold them in half and weave one through each set of eyelets in the hat band.
Tie all the ends together in a bow, so the hat is just tight to your head. This will keep the hat on in the wind, and also adds a nice detail.
*optional: tie the chains in a knot and cut off the excess, then sew on a flower or some other embellishment over the knot for a little more flair.

This is absolutely lovely! I am fascinated with these sun hats since I can never find one when I need one. I am definitely making a couple of these! Thank you so much for the pattern.
Is this USA or English please
USA crochet terms. 🙂
Thanks for making and sharing this pattern. I am going to try it.
I love hats like this. What I have been wondering is can hats like this be washed? If not how are they cleaned? Also do you heat set the brimlock? Thank you for your beautiful designs and thank you for any info.
I would spot clean hats with brimlock. The brimlock does not need to be heat set, just make sure you don’t have any twists in it.
I really love this hat! I’ve been searching for several years for a good sun hat pattern. Just beautiful. I have a question, did you block this hat after you finished it? If so, how did you block it? I’ve never blocked a hat before. Thanks for your help and this wonderful pattern!
Nope, I did not block it. You could block a hat using a mannequin head, but it is not needed for this hat.
This is a beautiful sun hat! Do you know if the pattern for the butterfly still available? I haven’t been able to get it. I haven’t made this hat yet, but am hoping to make it for a gift. Do you think it will work with Lily Sugar ‘n Cream cotton yarn? Thanks so much. ~Chris
Hmm…Not sure where it went. There are several similar patterns here.
If you get gauge, it will be OK, but the finish of that yarn is duller, and also it is thicker than the recommended yarn.
Would #3 cotton thread work for this? Or another substitute yarn?
Thanks
It may be a little small. Make a gauge swatch, as long as you can get gauge, you should be fine.
These hats are absolutely beautiful. Do you by chance a video tutorial for your patterns?
I do have some videos. There is a YouTube link at the top of the page that will take you to my videos. I have linked any that will be of use in each pattern as well.
Jessie, this pattern is wonderful! I’ve been working on making one with a slightly different accent pattern, and just got the millinery wire needed to complete the brim. I was wondering though, did you block yours when you made it?
It really depends on the yarn, but I did lightly steam block mine.
Just finish the hat for my daughter and it’s really beautiful. Thanks for the pattern.
That’s wonderful! Thank you. 🙂
what does tc mean in the star sun hat
Treble Crochet (also abbreviated as tr)
Will worsted weight yarn work with this pattern?
You could try to get gauge, and if you do it should work, but it will have a tighter look to the stitches.
How do you get the stiffness
There is hat wire in the brim. It’s linked in the supplies
Love the hat, I just need to figure out how many rows to eliminate for the hat length.
The links to the wire and joiner aren’t working. Any suggestions on where else to get it? Thanks so much!
I believe that company still has them, they just changed the links. Try searching on their site.
What’s the name of the company? 🙂

Hi! I’m a SUPER beginner at crochet, and I might be biting off more than I can chew… but I figured it couldn’t hurt to ask.
I’m trying to make this hat, but I wanted to do a patriotic theme… I have white yarn for the ‘star’ part, and then I wanted to use a different color (probably the red) for the other areas on the top of the hat itself, to highlight the star, to make it really pop out. Do you think this is possible? Would I be able to do a mid-row color change, or will this mess up the pattern? Thanks for your time!
There would be a LOT of ends to weave in, but you could give it a go.
Jesse,
What mm Brimlock/hat wire did you use for this Crochet Star Sun Hat pattern?
Thank you so much for the lovely (and free) patterns.
I just used the round brimlock, which I’ve only ever seen sold for hats in one size. I think it’s 2 mm?
I love making this hat. I do have a question though. How on earth do you manage to get the hat on a 44″ brim wire? Every time I make this it’s at 50″ or more.
Maybe our gauge is different, or maybe you like your brims pulled tighter then I like mine? At the end of the day, if you’re happy with your results, then all is good! 🙂
Hi Jessie I am making your star sun hat but I am having trouble with row 27! Not totally understanding it. I believe maybe it is just and increase but not sure. The one chain space of 60 has me confused.
The 60 chain one spaces is in the row count after the period. It tells you that when you are done with the round, there should be 60 chain one spaces in the round.
