Stitch Markers – not just for marking rounds and repeats in knit!

Many people think that stitch markers are just for marking the rounds and repeats in your knit projects, but there are so many other uses. They can also be used to mark rounds and repeats in crochet (you must use stitch markers that open or split for crochet). In addition they can be used as “pins” when planning or seaming pieces together. Let’s take a look at some of the stitch markers out there and what they are good for. If you would like more details or to purchase any of the markers, just click on the images to go to the affiliate links where you can read more.

First we have the traditional circular markers in various sizes. These basically just mark your rounds, repeats, or other special stitches on your knitting needles. They can’t be used to mark crochet because they will get stuck in your work. They do have several other uses outside of stitch marking; such as they can be crocheted around to make jewelry.

Clover also makes triangular versions of the basic stitch marker. The idea is that they don’t slip off your needles as easily when you slip them from one to the other – so not as much fishing around in the couch cushions. At least that is what it seems to be to me. 😉

Now we have the basic split markers. These work great for crochet as they can be removed from your work. I don’t tend to use them for much else because they can sometimes be a bit of a pain to slide in and out of the yarn, and I tend to pull my yarn trying to get to the opening.

That leads us to the locking stitch markers. If I could only have one kind of stitch marker, this would be it. They work for knit or crochet, they are easy to get in and out of your yarn, and they make awesome safety pins to hold your work together when you are seaming. I love these little guys!

Lastly I have included a stitch holder. I wouldn’t use this to mark stitches, but it does work like a giant safety pin if you need one. Plus, it’s great for it’s intended use of holding multiple stitches for whatever reason you may need to hold your knitting stitches off your needle.

Well, my friends, I hope you found that useful. Now stock up on your stitch markers so you don’t have to worry when the couch eats a few.

  1. Very informative! I would never have thought about using them as pins for blocking knitted items. Thanks so much for this great tip!

  2. I use a stitch holder to keep a row counter when crocheting in the round, easier to find than a pencil. Ideal for your mandala rug pattern.
