Today I get to share with you a new book with a really nifty way to make double sided quilted hexagons. Fast-Fold Hexies from Pre-cuts & Stash by Mary M. Hogan teaches this great technique that will change the way you make hexagons.

Most of us who have made quilted hexagons before have done so with the traditional paper-piecing method. This method makes a beautiful product that needs a backing, as it is only finished on one side. The method that Mary teaches in her book makes a double sided hexagon which can be made with or without batting. Mary includes instructions on how to sew her hexagons by hand or machine.

I really enjoyed giving this technique a try. It was easy to do and super portable. Mary’s instructions are very clear, so even a novice could make these lovely creations. The book starts with complete instructions on how to make the hexagons, with or without batting, and hand or machine sewn. There are plenty of photos to help along the way.

From there, Mary has included several projects that can be made from these hexagons, but of course there are so many other projects you could make with them as well. The applications are endless! The back of the book includes the templates needed to make the hexagons in a couple sizes, and Mary even explains the math so you can make the hexagons in any size you would like. Everything about this book makes learning this technique fun and easy.

I was so excited by this technique that I had to give it a to myself. I decided to make the trivet. I had some fat quarters in my stash, so I used those. I even found some scraps of batting left over from a blanket I quilted years ago, and those scraps were perfect for these hexagons. Now in the book Mary has you place the inner hexagon off-center from the outer one, so the points of the inner hexagon are pointing at the center of the sides of the outer hexagon. I decided to try lining them up. I’m not sure which way I like better, but I do like them both! I hand stitched mine because I wanted to make it for a certain friend for a Christmas present and I knew she would appreciate the hand-stitching.
