I’m a Square – A modern crochet blanket that is so fun to make

This post may contain affiliate links, which means I may receive a commission if you make a purchase using these links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The I’m a Square blanket is full of bright, happy colors. It’s crocheted using join as you go methods so there is no seaming. It is quite easy to adjust the size of this blanket. Use the colors suggested for a modern, unisex look, or change the colors to suit your style; there are plenty of color options of Paintbox DK yarn so the choice is yours.

Getting Started:
Join As You Go Rnd
– Grannies – Start the Rnd 2 of your small square and work until you get to the first corner you need to join. Make the first ch of the corner as normal, to make the second ch, first insert the hook from front to back into the corner ch that you are connecting to, then make the chain by yarning over, and pulling through everything on your needle.

Now complete the next 3 dc. Connect the next ch stitch, by first inserting your hook from front to back in the chain space you are joining into, then make the chain in the same manner as before.

Complete the next 3 dc and then join the first ch of the corner ch-2 to the corner your are joining to as  before. Complete the Rnd. – Find a video and photo tutorial HERE.

Join As You Go Row – Single Crochets – Turn, ch 1 (does not count as a st), * insert hook from front to back in the top loop of the sc that you are joining into, sc into the next st on the original piece as follows: insert hook into st, yo, pull through st, yo, pull through all the loops on the hook, repeat from * across to end. – Find a video and photo tutorial HERE.

To make blanket wider, make the strips of squares longer. Add 9 sc for each square added to each of the strip rows and the top and bottom border. To make blanket taller, add more strips, this will add 29 sc to the sides of the borders for each strip added.

Pattern:

Small Square:
Rnd 1: With first color, ch 3, sl st into first ch made to form a loop, ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2), [3 dc, ch 2 in loop] 3 times, 2 dc in loop, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-5, sl st into ch-2 sp.
Rnd 2: Switch to second color, ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2), 3 dc in same ch-2 sp, ch 1*(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 sp, ch 1; repeat from * 2 more times, 2 dc in next ch-2 sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-5.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
