The Lorraine knit ear warmers with buttons is a quick knit pattern that makes a perfect gift. In addition, they are a great way to keep your ears warm, without damaging your styled hair. I made a crochet version of Lorraine the other day, and it just screamed “make me in knit, as well!” So here is the free knit headband pattern version.
In order to make Lorraine, it is important that you understand how to make short rows. Luckily, there are many tutorials on the internet. Here is one that may help, but feel free to find another!

Knit Ear Warmers With Buttons Supplies
Yarn: Size 5, Bulky weight, Loops & Threads Charisma used in sample
about 40 yds used
Size: one size fits most adult woman and is adjustable by buttons, however, instructions are included on how to alter for sizing
Needles: size 11, 8.0mm
Gauge: 12 stitches by 16 rows in a 4″ stocking knit square
Stitches and abbreviations used
co ~ cast on
k ~ knit
p ~ purl
k2tog ~ knit 2 together
yo ~ yarn over
s ~ slip
st(s) ~ stitches
Short rows are used for shaping.
Size alterations: To make warmers longer, co on more (3 sts per inch), to make it shorter, cast on less. To make warmers wider or thinner, add or remove rows.
Knit Ear Warmers With Buttons Pattern
CO 65
Rows 1 & 2: S1 knit wise, k to the end of the row.
Row 3: S1 knit wise, k1, k2tog, yo, k2, k2tog, yo, k until 4 sts remain, turn.
Row 4: K6, p until 10 sts remain, k6, turn. (4 sts remain)
Row 5: K until 6 sts remain, turn.
Row 6: K4, p until 10 sts remain, k4, turn. (6 sts remain)
Row 7: K until 8 sts remain, turn.
Row 8: K2, p until 10 sts remain, k2, turn. (8 sts remain)
Row 9: K until 10 sts remain, turn.
Row 10: P until 10 sts remain, turn.
Row 11: K until 12 sts remain, turn.
Row 12: P until 12 sts remain, turn.
Row 13: K to end.
Rows 14 & 15: S1 knit wise, k to end.
Bind off knit wise.
Sew buttons to end without button holes.
