Marital bliss

This evening I am going to share a story with you. It’s something that happened a few weeks ago.

Doug tends to go to bed before me. One, two, sometimes three hours before me. He also gets up before me. When it’s only around an hour, I sometimes find him still reading his library book when I head to bed. Other nights he is already asleep by the time I climb into bed. Most of these nights he is sleeping on his side of the bed. Sometimes, however, I get into the room and he is asleep smack in the middle of the bed, on his stomach, with his hands under his head and his elbows pointing straight out. Doug is 6 feet tall. When he sleeps this way he effectively takes up the entire bed.

On most of the nights that I find him this way, he wakes up just enough to move over when sit on the edge of the bed to turn off the light, or when I turn off the light. On the rare occasion that he does not wake up, I gently shake his arm and he eventually wakes and moves.

The evening in question, however, was a bit different.

I came into the room and there he was, fast asleep covering the vast majority of the bed.  I just didn’t have the heart to wake him that night. He had had a long day, and he wasn’t feeling well. I took another look at the space he had left for me. I decided I could tetris myself into that oddly shaped bit of bed still left on my side. So I made an attempt.

I doubt it was the surprised yelp that I let out as I started to slip off my precarious perch at the edge of the bed that caused him to stir, after all, he is hard of hearing and takes out his hearing aids to sleep. It was most likely the shaking of the bed as I clawed my way back up, after catching myself before I truly fell to the floor.

As I said, he stirred. As in he opened his eyes, gave me a look like I had lost my ever~loving mind, and turned his head to the other side.

That’s it?! I nearly fall off the bed in my Escher~esk attempt to tessellate into the minuscule space you have left me and all you do is turn your head!?!

poke…

…poke…

…Poke…

…POKE…

…grunt, shuffle, shuffle…

…ahh, my side!

He has no recollection of this event. Booger.
