Farmers Market Hexagon Bag AKA The Grand Old Flag Bag

The town farmers market is finally open for the season! I LOVE going to the farmers market, and I love using re~usable bags. For years I have been using the tote bags you can buy at the grocers, but this year I am making a market bag! This market bag has a hexagon base, a mesh side, and a long shoulder strap on top! I have chosen the super simple chain and slip st mesh for the side because it works so well for market bags, and I like the look. On our first outing to the market with the bag this morning, my daughter Vada dubbed it the “Grand Old Flag Bag.”

There are so many things I should be doing today. I think I will make a new pattern instead.

Farmers Market Hexagon Bag

Crochet Pattern
Easy Skill Level
Designed by Jessie Rayot

Sizes:
One size, but easy to adjust

Yarn:
Worsted weight, 100% cotton recommended ~ I used some unmarked yarn I had from a friend de~stashing, so I am not sure of the brand I used, but you can find some links of yarn I suggest at the bottom of this post. I used 180 grams of yarn (which is about 300 yards) to make mine.

Hook:
US H/8/5.00mm

Other Supplies:
Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge:
Not very important, it’s a bag!

Stitches and Skills used:
ch ~ chain
sl st ~ slip st
sc ~ single crochet
dc ~ double crochet
st(s) ~ stitch(es)
sp ~ space

Pattern:

Round 1: Ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring, ch 4 (counts as first dc, and ch 1), [2 dc in ring , ch 1] 5 times, dc in ring, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. (6 sets of {2 dc, ch-1})

Round 2: Sl st into ch-1 sp,

ch 5 (counts as first dc, and ch 2), dc in same ch-1 sp, [dc in each of next 2 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-1 corner] 5 times, dc in each of next 2 dc, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. (6 sets of {4 dc, ch-2})

Round 3: Sl st into ch-2 sp,

ch 5 (counts as first dc, and ch 2), dc in same ch-2 sp, [dc in each of next 4 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 corner] 5 times, dc in each of next 4 dc, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. (6 sets of {6 dc, ch-2})

Round 4: Sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 5 (counts as first dc, and ch 2), dc in same ch-2 sp, [dc in each of next 6 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 corner] 5 times, dc in each of next 6 dc, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. (6 sets of {8 dc, ch-2})

Round 5: Sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 5 (counts as first dc, and ch 2), dc in same ch-2 sp, [dc in each of next 8 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 corner] 5 times, dc in each of next 8 dc, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. (6 sets of {10 dc, ch-2})

Round 6: Sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 5 (counts as first dc, and ch 2), dc in same ch-2 sp, [dc in each of next 10 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 corner] 5 times, dc in each of next 10 dc, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. (6 sets of {12 dc, ch-2})

Round 7: Sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 5 (counts as first dc, and ch 2), dc in same ch-2 sp, [dc in each of next 12 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 corner] 5 times, dc in each of next 12 dc, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. (6 sets of {14 dc, ch-2})

Round 8: Sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 5 (counts as first dc, and ch 2), dc in same ch-2 sp, [dc in each of next 14 dc, (dc, ch 2, dc) in ch-2 corner] 5 times, dc in each of next 14 dc, join with a sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. (6 sets of {16 dc, ch-2})

Round 9: Turn, ch 1,

[sl st  in each of next 16 sc, sl st in each of next 2 ch], 6 times, sl st into first sl st. (108 sl st)

Round 10: Turn, ch 1 (does not count as first st), sc in each sl st around, sl st to top of first sc. (108 sc)
*It is a little hard to insert the hook in just the slip st in this round, but it is worth the effort to get the nice angle between the bottom and side.

Round 11 ~ 13: Ch 1 (does not count as first st), sc in each sc around, sl st to top of first sc. (108 sc)

Spiral Mesh Rounds: [Ch 5, skip 4, sc in next sc] 21 times, [ch 5, sl st in center of next ch-5] until there are a total of 25 rounds of mesh.
*If you want a longer bag, add more mesh, for a shorter bag, make less. I think next time I make one, I will do 20 rounds, 25 gets a bit long with heavy veggies in the bottom.

Top & first side of strap

Round 1: 3 sc in the same ch-5 sp were the last sl st was placed, 5 sc in each ch-5 sp around, sl st to top of first sc. (108 sc)

Round 2 ~ 4: Ch 1 (does not count as first st), sc in each sc around, sl st to top of first sc. (108 sc)

Round 5: Ch 146, skip 54, sc2tog, sc in each of the next 50 sts, sc2tog. (198 sc)
*This strap is long so it can hang across your body. If it is too long or stretches too much, you can tie a knot in the top of the strap. You can also take of 50 chains to make it a bit shorter, and it should still work across your body.

Round 6: Working in back loops of the chains made at the start of the last round and then in both loops of the sc sts made in the last round, sc2tog, sc in each of the next 142 sts, sc2tog twice, sc in each of the next 48 sts, sc2tog. (194 sts)

Round 7: Sc2tog, sc in each of the next 140 sts, sc2tog twice, sc in each of the next 46 sts, sc2tog. (194 sts)

Round 8: Sc2tog, sc in each of the next 138 sts, sc2tog, fasten off. (140 sts)

Second side of strap

Round 1: Sl st t first unworked sc from round 5 above, sc2tog,  sc in each of the next 50 sts, sc2tog twice,  sc in each of the next 142 sts, sc2tog. (196 sc)

Round 2: Sc2tog, sc in each of the next 48 sts, sc2tog twice, sc in each of the next 140 sts, sc2tog. (192 sts)

Round 3: Sc2tog, sc in each of the next 46 sts, sc2tog twice, sc in each of the next 138 sts, sc2tog, fasten off. (188 sts)

  1. Farmers Market Hexagon Bag AKA The Grand Old Flag Bag
had you thought about working rows of single crochet on top of the chain loops in the mesh part of the bag
it will take more yarn but will be much more robust

  2. Jessie, you are a fantastic pattern designer. I LOVE your mandala rug pattern!!! After completing the final row (40), I deemed it too gorgeous to have anyone step on it, and decided to turn it into a round table-mat (instead of using four placemats) on a 36-inch round table. Is it possible to extend the current 31-inch diameter (to 36-inches) by repeating a section of rows and still maintain the beautiful pattern? I love the chenille look and feel of it and want to maintain that plushness, so I may not block it. Thank you for any assistance you can provide to me.

  3. Thank you, Jessie for your hexagon string market bag PATTERN. I’m enjoying studying it, and plan to try crocheting it. I like the stronger bottom, and the flexibility of the sides, and STRONG STRAPS. YOUR PHOTOS ARE SO HELPFUL TOO.

    • Thank you for letting me know. I’ll try to find a more clear way to explain them and see if I can add some photos. Are you still having a hard time, or did you get it? If you’re still having a hard time, please let me know where you’re stuck so I can help.
