Spa Basket

This basket is the first pattern in the Spa Basket CAL. This event will run from 8/30/16 through 12/7/16, and features 12 patterns from 12 amazing designers. The patterns will combine to make a lovely spa basket, perfect for gifting. There will also be a giveaway with 12 winners!! You can find all the details at the intro post HERE, plus some more info about the giveaway at the end of this post. The Spa Basket is a medium or large starched basket that will hold you various spa day needs. It’s always nice to pamper yourself, and that is exactly what this CAL is all about!

Size:
17″ x 10″ or 12″ x 8″

Yarn:
Red Heart Creme de la Creme: 350 Dark Linen – 3 skeins
Red Heart Creme de la Creme: 3679 Spruce – 1 skein

Hook/Needles:
US-7, 4.5mm

Gauge:
16 sts x 20 rows = 4” [10 cm] in sc (before starching)

Other supplies:
yarn needle

Stitches and Abbreviations:
bpdc – back post double crochet
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
fpdc – front post double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)

Getting Started:
The pattern is written with the larger size counts first, and the smaller size counts after in (parentheses).

Pattern:
Bottom:
Row 1:
Ch 61 (43), sc in 2nd ch from hook and each remaining ch. – {60 (42) sc}
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, sc in each st across. – {60 (42) sc}
Repeat row 2: 40 (31) more times. 42 (33) rows total at this point.
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Set up for sides:
Rnd 1: Working around outer edge of piece, place a slip knot on hook, pull the loop through the last sc made and sl st in each st across (60 (42) sl sts), 30 (24) sl st evening in side, sl st in each st across (60 (42) sl sts), 30 (24) sl st evening in side. – {180 (132) sl sts}
Fasten off and weave in all ends

Sides:
Rnd 1: Working from front with Spruce, join yarn to first sl st made in last round, ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in each sl st around, join with a sl st to top of beginning sc. – {180 (132) sc}
Rnd 2: Switch to Dark Linen, ch 2 (does not count as a st here or throughout), dc in each st around, join with a sl st to top of first dc.
Rnd 3: Ch 2, fpdc in first 3 sts, bpdc in next 3 sts, [fpdc in next 3 sts, bpdc in next 3 sts] around, join with a sl st to top of first fpdc.
Rnd 4: Ch 2, bpdc in first 3 sts, fpdc in next 3 sts, [bpdc in next 3 sts, fpdc in next 3 sts] around, join with a sl st to top of first bpdc.
Rnd 5: Ch 2, fpdc in first 3 sts, bpdc in next 3 sts, [fpdc in next 3 sts, bpdc in next 3 sts] around, join with a sl st to top of first fpdc.
Rnd 6: With Spruce, ch 2, bpdc in first 3 sts, fpdc in next 3 sts, [bpdc in next 3 sts, fpdc in next 3 sts] around, join with a sl st to top of first bpdc.

Rnd 11: Ch 2, fpdc in first 3 sts, bpdc in next 3 sts, [fpdc in next 3 sts, bpdc in next 3 sts] around, join with a sl st to top of first fpdc.
Rnds 12 & 13: Switch to Dark Linen, ch 1 (does not count as a st), sc in each st around, join with a sl st to top of first sc.

The basket will be a bit floppy due to its large size. If you want it stiffer, you can starch it. I will post a tutorial on how to do that tomorrow! Here’s the tutorial! The finished measurements listed are those after the basket has been starched.
