Still an enigma

That’s right, I’m still an enigma.

A little while ago I told you about how I am a medical enigma right now. At that point, I was drinking barium and waiting to go to my CT scan. Eventually the time came, and off I went to my appointment.

Due to the time sensitive nature of when you drink the barium versus when the CT happens, these appointments tend to be on time. So I got there my requisite 15 minutes early (+10 minutes earlier than that,) and I filled in the small amount of paperwork they had for me, and waited to be called in. Eventually it was my turn to put on the backless robe and head on into the room with the giant wanna~be~Stargate.

The tech explain how everything was going to work, and one of them gave me a small drink that was kind of like Alka-Seltzer, and told me to try really hard not to burp. Well of course when she said that I really wanted to burp. But, I tried really hard to be a good girl, drink it all, and held in the burp. See, sometimes I do behave. I laid down on the little bed and it rose up very slowly. Did I mention I get motion sickness? I do, I get motion sickness. Really. Easily. The bed went into the iris of the wanna~be~Stargate, it sat there for a moment, and then it went out a little bit, and then in a little bit, and out a little bit, and in a little bit, and then it told me to hold my breath, (wait a minute, Stargates can’t talk,) then out, then in, then it told me to breathe normally, out, in, hold my breath, out, in, breathe normally, and so on.

When we were all done, the tech told me that my doctor had requested a “wet read” for the scan. I guess that’s what they call it when they put a rush on the read. She said I could get dressed and wait in the waiting room and they would have the results in about half an hour, then they would call my doctor and let me know from there. I took a moment to collect my swirling belly (did I mention I get motion sickness,) got up, and went to the waiting room. So, once again, I waited.

Eventually someone came into the waiting room to let me know that the results had been shared with my doctor and he wanted me to go home and call him. Go home and call him? Was he just trying to be nice and not ask me to have a private conversation in the waiting room of the radiology center? Was he just not assuming that I had a cell phone with me? Or was he about to tell me something so horrible that he didn’t want me to have to drive after hearing it? So, terrified and still in pain, I drove home.

As soon as I got inside I called the doctor. The answering service answered. NOOOO!!!!!

“I was told to call the doctor as soon as I got home.”
“But they are closed for the day.”
“But I was just at the radiology center and they called the doctor and he told them to tell me to go home and then call him, and that is what I did.” (don’t cry, don’t cry)
“Oh, hold please” (Thank the Lord!)

So here is what we know now. I do not have appendicitis. I do not have diverticulitis. I do have a lot of inflammation, so I most likely have some form of a GI infection. My doctor called the GI specialist he sends his patients to, and was assured that if I called in the morning, they would find an appointment for me tomorrow. The doctor also called in some antibiotics. I asked if they had called in anything for the pain. They said no, as it can cause constipation (sorry for the TMI) and they don’t like risking that with GI issues. I told them I very rarely take any medications, so even a mild painkiller would most likely work for me, but I was in so much pain, I really needed something. They called in a mild painkiller.

So, once again, into the car I went. I drove over to the pharmacy, got my meds, and came home, relishing the thought that I would not have to leave again until tomorrow.

So, I am still in diagnostic limbo. We shall see what the specialist has to say tomorrow.
