The knit stitch is the first stitch you need to learn after casting on in order to get knitting. It’s pretty easy when you break it down into its parts.

Once you can cast on, knit, and bind off, then you can start creating all sorts of wonderful knit goodies.

Abbreviation:
k – knit

Before you can start making knit stitches, you will need to cast on some stitches. The single cast on is the easiest and can be found HERE.

With the working yarn in the back, insert the right needle from front to back AND left to right through the first stitch on the left needle.

Wrap the working yarn under and then over the right needle, creating a yarn over.

Use the tip of the right needle to pull the yarn over through the stitch on the left needle.

Slide the right needle up a bit so the new stitch isn’t too close to the tip.

Slide the old stitch off the left needle, and you now have a new knit stitch on the right needle.

You’ve made a knit stitch, now keep on going! The photo above is the garter stitch which is made by knitting all rows. The photo below is the knit side of stockinette stitch which is made by knitting one row and purling the next, and then repeating those two rows.
