Scrappy Crochet Bag – It’s just so fun and fluffy!!!!

The Scrappy Crochet Bag is a great way to use up those small balls of yarn you have left over from various projects. It’s a fun stash-buster and can be made as a little purse for your phone and a few other small items, or even as a water bottle holder. I just took mine on vacation and people loved it!

Scrappy Bag crochet pattern by Jessie At Home - 2

5×7″ when laid flat

Kraemer Yarns Tatamy DK, size 3 – (45% cotton, 55% acrylic), (100 g / 250 yds) – 40 g / 100 yds used
Various scrap yarn sizes 1-4 cut into 4″ strips approximately 150 yds used
72 yds of various yarns in 2 yd pieces (36 pieces, each 2 yds long)

US-7, 4.5mm

Gauge: Learn about gauge HERE
18 sts x 18 rows = 4” [10 cm] in single crochet

Other Supplies:
Yarn needle

Stitches and Abbreviations: click on highlighted sts for tutorials
ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
sp(s) – space(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)

Special Stitches:
hdc with Scrap – hdcs – Yo, insert hook in designated st, yo, fold a scrap of yarn in half and place center on hook, pull through (3 loops from working yarn and 1 loop from scrap on hook), yo, pull through everything.

Getting Started:
To make a round bottom for bag (such as for a water bottle), sc a flat circle to desired size then pick up pattern at Rnd 3. Find a pattern for making a sc flat circle HERE.
Round counts are at the end of each row after the period, if the count has changed from the previous round. – {count here}
Chs and sl sts are not included in Round counts unless specified.


Rnd 1: Ch 21, 2 sc in back loop of second ch from hook, sc in back loop of each of next 18 chs, sc in back loop of last ch, rotate, 2 sc in unworked top loop of last ch, sc in unworked top loop of each of next 18 chs, sc in unworked top loop of last ch, sl st to top of first ch to join. – {42 sc}
Rnd 2: Ch 1, 3 sc in first st, sc in each of next 20 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in each of next 20 sts, sl st to top of first sc to join. – {46 sc}
Rnd 3: Sl st in each st around.
Rnd 4: Ch 1, sc in each st from Rnd 2, working over sl sts from Rnd 3, do not join.
Rnd 5: Place marker, hdcs in each st around.
Repeat Rnd 5 until piece is 7″ tall or desired height.

Finishing Bag

Rnd 1: Sc in next st, place marker, sl st in each st to marker.

Fasten off then weave in ends and pull them to outside. Cut ends to same length as rest of fringe.


Tie 36 pieces of 2 yd long yarn together at one end.
Divide into 3 sections of 12 pieces each and braid together.
Tie at other end.
Decide how long strap should be and re-tie it to be shorter if needed. Use some scrap yarn to sew strap to bag.
