It’s time to become a crochet expert with the Hooded Cabled Cape pattern. We’re going to talk about how to change the gauge and/or size of the hood and the cape. We’ll add furry border to the hood and cape, and we even have video tutorials to guide you along with the pattern.

Adjust for Gauge
If your gauge does not match the pattern gauge, you can either change hooks and/or yarn until you get gauge, or you can follow the instructions below for customizing your size.
Customizing Your Size
If you want your hood to be deeper or wider, or if your gauge is different than the pattern, we have an easy way to adjust. Your first step will be finding your gauge.
Finding Your Gauge
To find your gauge, you will need to make a gauge swatch. Start by making a chain that’s about 8″ (20 cm) long. Dc in the second chain from the hook and each chain across. You need the gauge swatch to be at least 6″ (15 cm) long.
Next, ch 2, turn, dc in each st across. Repeat this row until your swatch is at least 6″ (15 cm) tall.
Measure across the middle of the swatch and count how many sts are in 4″ (10 cm). Be sure to start counting 1″ (2.5 cm) in from the side.
For the adjustments we are making, we only need to know the stitch gauge. Write down how many sts are in 4″ (10 cm). For this tutorial, we will pretend we counted 15 sts. Now divide the stitch count by the length you measured – 4 for 4″ and 10 for 10 cm; do NOT round this number. This is your 1″ or 1 cm gauge.
So our stitch gauge is 15 sts = 4″ (10 cm)
or
3.75 sts per inch or 1.5 sts per centimeter.
Determining Your Hood Width
Now it’s time to decide how wide around you want your hood. If you have a garment with a hood that you like the size of, you can measure that. Start measuring at the point where the hood meets the neck, then measure around the opening to the point where the other side of the hood meets the next. The is the width of your hood. For this tutorial, we will pretend that our measurement was 29″ or 73.5 cm.
Fi you don’t have a hood to measure, use scarf, pillowcase, sheet, or some other rectangle of fabric. Drape it around your head so the edge is where the opening of the hood would be. Stand in front of a mirror and play around with it until you get it to an opening size you like. Mark the opening length and measure it. This is the width of your hood.
Altering the Pattern
Hood
Multiply the desired width of your hood by the per inch or per centimeter gauge.
29 x 3.75 = 108.75 sts
or
73.5 x 1.5 = 110.25 sts
Subtract 94 (the pattern Row 1 st count). Then round up to the next multiple of 6.
108.75 – 94 = 14.75 sts rounds up to 18 (6×3=18)
or
110.25 – 94 = 16.25 sts rounds up to 18 (6×3=18)
Add the rounded number to the pattern starting chain.
95 + 18 = 113 ch
Add the multiple to each set of sc and hdc in Row 1 (10 + 3 = 13), add twice the multiple to the set of dc in Row 1 (48 + 6 = 54). Use these numbers for your new Row 1.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 95 113, sl st in 2nd chain from hook and each of next 2 chs, sc in next 10 13 chs, hdc in next 10 13 chs, dc in next 48 54 chs, hdc in next 10 13 chs, sc in next 10 13 sc, sl sl in last 3 chs. [94 112 sts]
For Row 2 and the rest of the hood, add the multiple to each set of sc, hdc, and dc.
Row 2 (WS): Ch 1, turn, sl st in blo of first 4 sts, sc in next 10 13 sts, hdc in next 10 13 sts, dc in next 17 20 sts, bptr around next 2 sts, fptr around next 2 sts, bptr around next 4 sts, fptr around next 2 sts, bptr around next 2 sts, dc in next 17 20 sts, hdc in next 10 13 sts, sc in next 10 13 sts, sl st in blo of next 3 sts, leave last st unworked. [93 111 sts]
Neck
Follow the Row 1 instructions for the neck with the following adjustments based on how many sts are left after you finish the last possible repeat of [dc2tog, dc in next st]:
- O – No adjustments needed.
- 1 – Remove last dc made so there are 2 sts left, make a dc2tog.
- 2 – dc in each of last 2 sts.
Finish neck as written – your stitch count will be an odd number, which odd number will depend on your final hood stitch count.
Cape
Take your final stitch count and keep subtracting 8 until you get to one of the following numbers, making sure to note how many times you had to subtract 8:
63, 65, 67, 69
Make Cape Row 1 as follows, based on which of the numbers above you got down to, and using the number of times you subtracted 8 as X.
