Bright Star Crochet Square – A 12″ square motif to make you happy.

The Bright Star Crochet Square is a happy afghan square in three colors that can be used alone or with others to make blankets of all sizes. Made in Red Heart with Love and a 6.0 mm hook it measures 12″ square. Change up the yarn weight and hook size to make the square in other sizes.

Bright Star Crochet Square Supplies

Size:
12″ square

Yarn:
Red Heart with Love: (100% Acrylic), Size 4 (10 wpi, worsted weight), 198 g / 370 yds
Choose 3 colors to make this square.

Rounds 1 – 6

Rnd 1: With Color A, ch 4, sl st into first ch made to form a ring, ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch 1), [3 dc in ring, ch 1] 4 times, 2 dc in ring, sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. – {5 groups of 3 dc}
Rnd 2: With Color B, [sl st into ch-1 sp, ch 1, skip 1, fpdc in next st, ch 1] 5 times, sl st in next ch-1 sp. – {5 sts}
Rnd 3: With Color A, ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2), 3 dc over sl st from Rnd 2 and into ch-1 sp from Rnd 1, [ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) over next sl st from Rnd 2 and into next ch-1 sp from Rnd 1] 4 times, ch 1, 2 dc over sl st from Rnd 2 and into ch-1 sp from Rnd 1, sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. – {10 sets of 3 dc}
Rnd 4: With Color B, [sl st into ch-2 sp, ch 3, fptr in fpdc from Rnd 2, ch 3] 5 times, sl st in ch-2 sp. – {5 sts}
Rnd 5: With Color A, sl st into ch-2 sp from Rnd 3, ch 4 (counts as first dc and ch 1), 4 dc in same ch-2 sp while working over ch-3 sp from Rnd 4, *skip 2 sts from Rnd 3, sl st in next dc, ch 1 (this will lay over top of the fptr from Rnd 4), sl st in next dc from Rnd 3, (4 dc, ch 1, 4 dc) in next ch-2 sp while working over ch-3 sp from Rnd 4; repeat from * 3 more times, skip 2 sts from Rnd 3, sl st in next dc, ch 1 (this will lay over top of the fptr from Rnd 4), sl st in next dc from Rnd 3, 3 dc in ch-2 sp, sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 4. – {10 sets of 4 dc}
Fasten off Color A.
Rnd 6: With Color B, sl st in ch-1 sp, *(dtr, tr, dc) in next ch-1 sp, fptr around fptr from Rnd 4, (dc, tr, dtr) in same ch-1 sp as just worked into, sl st into next ch-1 star point; repeat from * 4 more times, sl st in top of beginning sl st. – {35 sts}
Rnd 7: 2 Sc in each st around, sl st in top of beginning sc. – {70 sc}
Rnd 8: Sc in each st around, sl st in top of beginning sc.
Rnd 9: With Color C, ch 6 (counts as first dtr and ch 2), *2 dtr in next st, tr in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 4 sts, hdc in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 sts, tr in each of next 2 sts, (2 dtr, ch 2, 2 dtr) in next st, tr in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 sts, hdc in each of next 2 sts, sc in each of next 4 sts, hdc in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 sts, tr in each of next 2 sts**, 2 dtr in next st, ch 2, repeat from * to ** one more time, dtr in next st, sl st in 4th ch of beginning ch 6. – {20 sts on each side}
Rnd 10: Sl st in ch-2 corner sp, ch 1, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 corner sp, sc in each st to next ch-2 corner sp; repeat from * 3 more times, sl st in top of beginning sc. – {22 sts on each side}
Fasten off Color C.
Rnd 11: With Color A, sl st in ch-2 corner sp, ch 1, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 corner sp, sc in each st to next ch-2 corner sp; repeat from * 3 more times, sl st in top of beginning sc. – {24 sts on each side}
Rnd 12: Sl st in ch-2 corner sp, ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2), 2 dc in same ch-2 corner sp, *dc in each st to ch-2 corner sp, (2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc) in ch-2 corner sp; repeat from * 2 more times, dc in each st to ch-2 corner sp, dc in ch-2 corner sp, sl st in 3rd ch of beginning ch 5. – {28 sts on each side}
Rnd 13: Repeat Rnd 11. – {30 sts on each side}
Rnds 14 – 16: With Color B, repeat Rnds 11 – 13. – {38 sts on each side}
Fasten off and then weave in all ends.

  2. Could you help? On round 6 it states you’ll end up with 35 stitches but I’m not getting that. (dtr,tr,dc) Then fptr then (dc,tr,dtr) is 7 stitches and then you sl st into point – so 8 stitches. Or in round 7 you don’t sc into the slip stitches? Sorry I’m confused. Thanks if you can help direct me

    • In the “getting started” section it says that chs and sl sts are not counted in row counts. So there are 7 sts, and then you repeat that 4 more times, and 7 x 5 is 35. 🙂
