Knitted Surprise is wearable in a surprising number of styles! Wear it as a vest, an over shirt, a wrap, a scarf, or many other ways.

Knitted Surprise is also surprisingly easy to knit. With a simple one row repeat, the lace is so easy even a newbie will be able to handle it. Take your time to make sure the crossed section isn’t twisted. The wrap is easily shortened as well.

The yarn for this design was provided by Cascade Yarns. All opinions are my own.

Knitted Surprise was designed for All Free Knitting’s 10th birthday. I’m honored they asked me to celebrate with them!

Getting Started
  • Read through all instructions before beginning
  • Row counts are at the end of each row after the period, if the count has changed from the previous row. {count here}
  • To make pattern shorter, reduce the number of rows in the First and Last Sections by the same amount.

Pattern

First Section

With A, CO 79
Row 1: [K2tog, yo] until 1 st remains, k1.
Rows 2-100: Repeat Row 1.

Middle Section, First Side

Row 1: [K2tog, yo] 19 times, k2tog, place remaining 39 sts on stitch holder. {39 sts on needle}
Row 2: [K2tog, yo] until 1 st remains, k1.
Rows 3-60: Repeat Row 2.
At end of Row 60, the working yarn should be at the edge of the piece, not the middle.
Place sts on second stitch holder, then cut Color A leaving a long tail to weave in later.

Middle Section, Second Side

Place sts from first stitch holder on needle started at edge of piece.
Begin knitting Row 1 with last st placed on needle
Row 1: With Color B, [k2tog, yo] until 1 st remains, k1. {39 sts}
Row 2: [K2tog, yo] until 1 st remains, k1.
Rows 3-60: Repeat Row 2.
Place sts back on first stitch holder

Last Section

Place sts from second stitch holder onto needle starting with the stitch closest to the center of the piece (not the side with the yarn end), then continue to place sts from first stitch holder onto same needle, starting with the stitch closer to the edge of the piece. The two sides should cross over each other, but should NOT be twisted. See schematic for more details.

  1. Do you have back photos of the knitted surprise wrap/shawl/scarf/vest? I’d really like to see what’s going on in the back so I can figure out how it’s actually being worn.
